Black@IU
Archiving the Black Hoosier experience
Black@IU is a collaborative multimedia project created and curated by members of the Indiana University chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Inspired by the courageous work done by our Ivy League brothers and sisters on the "I, Too, Am Harvard" project, the Indiana University-Bloomington chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists began a project of similar weight. This project highlights the collective experiences of educated, ambitious, people of color at most every post-secondary institution across the country- and certainly those here at IU.
Black@IU is a multimedia project in two parts: Our Voices and Our Faces. Our Voices is dedicated to video interview shorts, allowing those with stories to tell and the time to sit down with us, a space to tell them. Our Faces is the collection of still photographs depicting the experiences that bond us as students of color. Both sections, as does the entire project, aim to shed light on what we feel is an underrepresented student voice.
We believe that this is a movement.
We believe that speaking out, critically analyzing the Black student experience, is crucial in fostering cultural awareness and understanding.
Members of NABJ began this project with one specific mission: to build community. Through Black@IU, we wish to bring together members of the Black student body by sharing those things that bond us. We aim to educate all Hoosiers about the misunderstandings that so often permeate our knowledge of one another.
We are telling our stories.
We are archiving the Black Hoosier experience.
